Via Ottaviano, a mere 100 meters from QuodLibet Bed and Breakfast and approximately 500 meters from St. Peter’s Square, has recently undergone a significant transformation, becoming a pedestrian-friendly boulevard. This change enhances the experience for both locals and visitors, offering a safer and more pleasant environment for shopping, dining, and leisurely strolls.
The Transformation
The renovation of Via Ottaviano began in March 2024, aiming to create a seamless pedestrian pathway connecting the Ottaviano Metro Station to St. Peter’s Square, facilitating the movement of pilgrims and tourists, especially in anticipation of the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025. The project, with an investment of €4 million, included:
- Unified Pavement: Replacing the previous asphalt and sidewalk disparities with a continuous basalt stone surface, eliminating level differences to ensure accessibility for all.
- Widened Sidewalks: Expanding sidewalks to approximately 5.5 meters, providing ample space for pedestrians.
- Greenery and Urban Furniture: Introducing rows of trees planted in travertine stone planters, along with new benches, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and comfort of the area.
- Traffic Restrictions: Limiting vehicular access to trams, buses, and emergency vehicles, effectively creating a pedestrian zone that prioritizes foot traffic.
The project was completed and officially inaugurated by Rome’s Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, on December 11, 2024. During the inauguration, Mayor Gualtieri referred to Via Ottaviano as a “boulevard, a living room, a linear square,” highlighting the successful transformation of the area into a welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.
Impact on the Community
The pedestrianization of Via Ottaviano has been met with enthusiasm from both the local community and tourists. The first weekend following the inauguration saw a significant increase in foot traffic, with people enjoying the festive atmosphere, shopping, and dining in the newly renovated area. The absence of vehicular traffic has not only improved safety but also enhanced the overall ambience, making it a more attractive destination for leisure activities.
